Essential preparation for the future

Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, Director of Business and Development at Isavia, talked about construction and development at Keflavík Airport and its surrounding area in an in-depth interview with Túristi this week.

"The construction that is currently under way is intended to prepare us for a capacity increase at the airport. We are starting to expand the terminal to the east. That work will be completed by the end of next year. Then a new connecting corridor will be built in the south direction. Unfortunately, this is accompanied by considerable disruption, but it is necessary to prepare the airport for the future and the expansions that will occur."

A development plan for Suðurnes was recently published, and Guðmundur Daði says he is very satisfied with the framework for the development of the region. "It is extremely exciting to build around Keflavík Airport and its surroundings. There are great opportunities for synergy in the work that Keflavík Airport's Development Association, Kadeco, has been doing around the airport and down to Helguvík - to develop and build this entire area holistically. When looking at aviation energy transition, it is likely that infrastructure will be needed a bit outside the airport. Also there are ideas for green gardens in this area. We also expect that a proposed increase in land-based fish farming will result in more income for Keflavík Airport."
