Construction in full swing at KEF this summer
This July, not only is the airport experiencing peak tourist traffic, but it is also undergoing significant construction. The largest expansion in the airport's history, Austurálma, is well underway, along with the extension of the South Building, the terminal housing C gates.
The expansion of Keflavík Airport is guided by long-term passenger forecasts and societal needs. A key component of the airport's future development is the East Wing. Once completed, it will surpass the size of the original terminal building, which was inaugurated in 1987. The East Wing will feature four new gangways, two bus gates, a modern baggage sorting system, and an expanded dining and waiting area.
This autumn, two new gangways and a new restaurant area will be opened, significantly enhancing space and comfort for passengers preparing for their flights.
Construction on the expansion of the South Building began in January 2024. The 1,900 square meter addition is expected to be completed by mid-2025. This project will significantly enhance passenger facilities, including a larger waiting area, new departure gates, and expanded restaurant and shopping spaces. The accompanying recent photos clearly showcase the progress being made.
