East Wing welcomes passengers at the end of 2023
A new baggage reception hall will be put into use at the end of 2023, a part of the Austurálma (East Wing), which is currently under construction at Keflavík Airport. "The bag reception belts will be tripled in size and performance, and the waiting area doubles in size for arriving passengers to the country. So this will be a complete revolution for passengers," says Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, director of business and development at Isavia.
This eastern wing of the airport will open in stages, to begin with, a new baggage reception next year and then in steps until the end of 2024." says Guðmundur Daði.
In subsequent phases, there will be a new restaurant and waiting area, six new gates for passengers, and the duty-free store's arrival shop will be expanded. "The East Wing and the improved facilities that come with it will re-vitalize the service experience at the airport," he says.
The size is 90% of Harpa Music/Conference Hall in Reykjavík. The building we are in now and the basement of the house is the size of a legal football field.
Guðmundur Daði recently discussed the responsible development of Keflavík Airport, the new East Wing, at an Isavia's breakfast meeting in Harpa. "Austurálma is the largest single project that is underway. This is a large-scale project that already leaves a strong impression on the airport's environment during construction. Great effort is put into giving passengers a warm welcome and making Iceland as appealing to them as possible. It is of course their first stop in Iceland and they are experiencing our new approach in the design of buildings and the environment of Keflavík Airport".
