Isavia places great emphasis on worker safety, whether in the operation of the airport or during construction. Hartmann Rúnarsson, an Isavia employee and senior project manager for the construction of the east wing, says that Isavia operates on a 'no-accident-policy' with the aim of ensuring that every worker gets home safe and sound.

To achieve this goal, emphasis is placed on educating everyone who regularly works at the site, but also those who visit the site sporadically. Employees' knowledge of safety issues is sharpened at daily and weekly meetings, where the most important aspects are reviewed.

Detailed incident recording is also crucial when it comes to preventing accidents. Hartmann says that it is especially important to record what he calls "near misses", i.e. incidents where an accident did not occur, but could have occurred. By recording these incidents, it is possible to fix what needs to be fixed so that accidents never occur.

He says he is pleased with the results, but there was one serious accident during the construction of the east wing. It is certainly one accident too many, but the person in question has recovered and is back at work.
